The gothic band THE GUESTS is one of the most popular gothic bands in Moscow,
as well as in the rest of Russia. Outstanding, young, cold and indifferent in
real life, they are wildly energetic on the stage - their numerous live
performances won them the fame of one of the best Russian gothic acts. THE
GUESTS's shows are always spectacular and impressive, with genuine rock-n-roll
drive!
The band was founded in August, 2002, by the guitar player and songwriter,
Alexey "Fiend". At first the band's name was THE UNHOLY GUESTS, but in the
beginning of 2005 they changed it to THE GUESTS for brevity. The band's music
is classical guitar-based gothic rock, so the musicians' inspiration came from
the British bands of the 80s: THE SISTERS OF MERCY, FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM and
THE CURE. Their songs are both in Russian and English.
Among the greatest live achievements of THE GUESTS is their performance
together with L'AME IMMORTELLE at the "Edge of the Night" Halloween party in
2003, as well as their more than successful show at the largest East-European
festival, "Castle Party 2004" (together with CLAN OF XYMOX, SUICIDE COMMANDO,
DEINE LAKAIEN). "Black Clouds, Red Skies", the 20-minute mini-album recorded in
2003 and distributed by the musicians themselves, was warmly greeted by gothic
music press all over the world, and songs from the album were in rotation at
independent radio stations and in dj-playlists at gothic dancefloors in Europe
and USA. The song "Synapses Cry" was included in the gothic compilation "New
Dark Age vol.2" of the famous German label Strobelight.
In October 2005, at Halloween, the band presented their first full-length CD
"...In Silence", which at the same time is the first release of the new
independent label Gravitator Records. In terms of music, THE GUESTS do not
forsake the stylistics of classical gothic rock. With a reasonably limited
range of musical techniques that are characteristic of this genre, the
musicians managed to create a very impressive work, well recorded, well played
and built on the basis of interwoven and reechoing sounds of guitar and
keyboards, combined with the clear drums and sensual, "cold" vocals. In terms
of style, the album is a wholesome conceptual work consisting of two parts that
reveal the evolution of the hero's inner world: from commotion and reflection
anticipating something beyond recall, in the first part, "Black on Red", to
crazy madness of the other part, "The Wild Side". And finally, a step beyond,
the spiritual purification through the ascend to the other side of everyday
life in the culminating song "Wild Side of Life". The sleeve design underlines
the inner drama background: the stylish design of the three-panel digipak
implies retro-style cutouts from old newspapers, photographs and postcards
dated back to the beginning of the 20th century, that bring the associations
with the Silver age of Russian art, the blossom of decadence, wild taints and
wild passions, and the illusory hush on the eve of the World War...
Even at this time it is obvious that THE GUESTS' album "...In Silence" is a
very serious and high-quality work of an outstanding and stylish band, which is
very probable to score as the best Russian gothic release in 2005.
